I just returned from a trip to Vegas, where I ‘found’ a new personal favourite table game – Mississippi Stud. This was accidental, I was looking for Caribbean Stud – only to find this has largely disappeared from casinos over the last few years.
Once you play Mississippi Stud (online or live), you’ll quickly see why this game is more fun, and has the potential for big wins too.
For me, one US friendly casino stands head and shoulders over the rest. Bovada.lv is part of the popular ‘Bodog’ family, and offers mobile and desktop casino games and slots from 3 of the leading software houses in one place.
Their promos are legendary and with more than 10 years of great service and fast cashouts behind them, you’ll know that this is a brand you can trust.

For me, one casino stands head and shoulders over the rest. 888 Casino has been around for more almost 20 years, and offers truly multi-platform gaming. They have slots and games from many software houses – and some unique games of their own too (I recommend you check out Millionaire Genie and it’s huge progressive jackpot!).
888 always have new player promotions running and are so confident you’ll enjoy their games that they will give new players $88 free (no deposit or card info needed) to try them out.

Here is how the game works:
You start with an ante bet, this is $5 minimum live and from $1 online. There are also 2 side bets, the 3 card bonus and 6-card bonus, which I have described after the main game.
The dealer gets 3 cards face down first, then each player is dealt two cards.
Here is where things get interesting.
You can now bet between 1 and 3 times your ante on each of 3 ‘streets’ of betting. For example, if you are dealt a pair of 6’s or over then you would bet 3 units for each of the dealers 3 cards (since you are guaranteed a push and can win a lot more). If you have 2 high cards which are not paired, then you can bet 1 unit at a time, if you pair with one of the dealer’s cards you can increase to 3 for the next card.
Since a high pair will always pay out, you do not need to wait for the dealer to turn each card – just add 3 units to each of the 3 betting squares and see how the hand progresses.
Play Mississippi Stud Online – The Pay Outs
I’ll go through an example below, first here are the pay outs. The best hand is made with any combination of your cards and the dealers 3 cards.
- Pair 66 to 10-10: Push
- Pair J-J +: Pays 1-to-1
- 2 Pairs: Pays 2-to-1
- Trips: Pays 3-to-1
- Straight: Pays 5-to-1
- Flush: Pays 6-to-1
- Full House: Pays 10-to-1
- Quads: Pays 20-to-1
- Straight Flush: 100-to-1
- Royal Flush: 500-to-1
Remember, you’ll bet 1 unit for the ante, then up to 3 for each of the 3 dealer cards. This means you can start with a pair, bet 9 units, turn up quads and have your total 10 bets multiplied by 20. I saw it happen – twice at the same table on the trip where I discovered the game!
Where to play? Not many places have this game yet, the only place I could find listing it for real money is BetFair New Jersey (which is only open those within NJ borders). You can play a very slick free version at SHFL, which lets you try out all the Sufflemaster games online for fun, here is the link: http://playshfl.com/#missstud
Play Mississippi Stud Online – The Strategy
The core strategy for Mississippi stud is fairly simple, where it gets complex is including the straight / royal flush permutations in your action. Here you will find the basic strategy (based on card strength) and the straight flush addition at the end.
In this game you should think of the cards as low / mid / high.
- Low Cards = 2 through 5
- Mid Cards = 6 through 10
- High Cards = Jacks through Aces
The First Decision Is Based On Your Own Cards
If you are dealt either a high pair or a mid-pair, you should add 3 units to all the remaining betting spots immediately. You are guaranteed at least a ‘push’ (for mid, or 1-to-1 win for high) and can easily improve to better. The same thing occurs if you pair one of the dealer’s cards or the dealer turns up a pair – as soon as you know that you have a push or better, just load up those remaining squares.
- If you are dealt at least one high card, then play the first bet for one unit.
- If you are dealt 2 mid-cards, then you should also play for one unit.
- If you are dealt a low pair, then you should play for one unit.
- You can also play 1 unit with 5-6 suited.
3 Card Decisions In Mississippi Stud
Once betting is completed, the dealer will turn over her first card. Your decision here depends on the mix of high, mid and low cards.
- Again, if you hit 66+ then load up the remaining betting spots with 3 units each.
- Otherwise, continue betting 1 unit if the following is true:
- You have 2+ high cards or 1 high and 1 mid card
- You have a low pair (22 to 55)
- You have 3 mid-cards (6 to 10)
- You have 3 suited cards
- You have a no-gap low straight draw, or 1-gap straight draw with 2 mid+ cards.
There are some variations for straight flush and royal flush draws, which I have added to the end of this article.
4 Card Decisions In Mississippi Stud
If you made a pair 66 or better on the previous street then you should load up the last betting spot with 3 units. Otherwise, follow the guidelines below.
- If you have 4 suited cards add 3 units to the last betting spot.
- If you have an open ended straight draw 8 or over, raise 3 units
- Otherwise, you’ll continue with 1 unit if the following is true:
- You have a low pair
- You have 2+ high cards
- You have 1 high card and 2 mid-cards
- You raised 3x on previous streets and have 1+ high or 2+ mid cards
- You have an inside straight draw
Mississippi Stud Side Bets
There are two main side bets in the live version of Mississippi Stud. These are the 3 card bonus, and the 6 card bonus.
3-Card Bonus: This pays out based on the dealers 3 cards, with 50-to-1 possible for a straight flush. The minimum bet here is $5 live (I assume that when we get a widely available online game for real money this will be equal to the table stakes offered).
6-Card Bonus: This one combines the players 2 cards along with 4 separate cards which the dealer stores face-down before dealing the 3 normal cards. At Vegas Casinos you could get $1,000,000 for a 6-card royal flush in diamonds – with the stipulation that you needed to bet on the 3-card bonus too.
Where To Play Mississippi Stud Online
This game has yet to make it online for real money... there are a couple of places to play for fun, http://playshfl.com/#missstud being the best by a long way.
There is also an Android app, which is also for fun-only, I have not yet tested this one out - though here is the link to the Google Play Store for anyone who is interested.
I know that some of you find play-money a little on the pointless side. If this is you then there are some entertaining casino poker alternatives around, Let 'em Ride is always fun, and of course, there is always 3-card poker. Worldwide readers can find both of these at the excellent www.32red.com
Mississippi Stud – Advanced Strategy
Royal and Straight Flush draws have huge returns in this game, and become worth changing up your strategy if you get the chance to make one. Remember, going for an inside draw will be higher variance, you’ll lose bets often when it misses. In the long-run, you’ll make more cash this way, so the following is worth learning.
The changes occur after 3 cards:
- If you have any Royal Flush Draw or Straight Flush draw with no gaps, raise 3 units.
- If your straight flush draw has 1 gap, raise 3 units if you also have 1 high card
- If your straight flush draw has 2 gaps, raise 3 units with 2 high cards
What you will find is that your draw often gets busted on the 4th card, however you’ll still hit enough pairs, straights or flushes to give you smaller wins along the way.

Free to Play Table Games Online
There are many forms of casino poker available online. Mississippi Stud Poker is slightly different, with more strategy involved in the game play compared to similar games.
This game has four rounds of betting. Your initial ante bet, then three further rounds, where you get to choose your bet size. In addition, you can place a side bet based on the three community cards.
Mississippi Stud Poker is available online today in New Jersey for real money. Residents and non-residents can enjoy the game, the only rule being that you have to be within the state when you play. Look out for this game coming online in other states with online gambling regulation soon.
You’ll find everything you need to get started playing Mississippi Stud below. The game play and betting rounds are explained first below. This includes the pay table. You’ll also find information on the popular side bets below.
How Mississippi Stud Poker Works
To start a hand of Mississippi Stud, you place an ante. In live casinos there is typically a $5 minimum for this game. Bets can be much smaller if you are playing online. When placing your ante, keep in mind that there are three more betting rounds, each with up to three units. This means your total outlay for a hand can be up to 10x your initial ante.
Having placed your ante bet, you’ll be dealt two cards, while three community cards are also dealt (these community cards will be face down at this stage).
Based on your initial two cards, you’ll now decide whether to fold, or to bet either 1x, 2x or 3x the ante.
If you decide to continue, the first of the community cards is turned over. Once again, you’ll now choose whether to fold or bet 1x, 2x or 3x the ante. If you continue, the second community card will be revealed – and you’ll get to choose whether to fold or bet (1x, 2x or 3x the ante).
If you’re still in the hand at this point, the final community card will be revealed. The final five card hand will now be compared to the pay table and if you have a hand of a pair of 6’s or better, you’ll get paid.

- Full House 10:1

- Two Pair 2:1

- Pair of 6s to 10s – Push
Basic Strategy for Mississippi Stud
By dividing cards into high, medium and low – the strategy becomes simple. High cards are jacks or over (you bet paid for a pair of these). Medium cards are the ‘push cards’ 6 through 10, and low cards are 5 or under.
If you are dealt any pair 6+, you will bet three units on all streets. You have at least a push and can improve your hand as the community cards are revealed. For pairs or 2’s through 5’s you can bet three units initially. If you improve on the next card, you’ll win big – if not then betting a single unit on the remaining streets is optimal.
You bet a single unit on any hand with containing at least one high card or two medium cards. Suits are not relevant. Fold hands with one medium and one low, or two low cards. There is one exception to this – bet a single unit on 5-6 suited.
As the community cards are revealed, your strategy will adapt. Bet three units any time you make a pair of 6’s+. Continue betting single units as more high cards or push cards are revealed. If you have a draw to a straight or a flush before the last community card is dealt, bet 3 units. You’ll fold single high cards with a low, or two medium cards if the first community card is a low.
3 Card Bonus Bet
As well as the standard game you can also place a side bet – the ‘3 Card Bonus Bet’. This side bet is based on the hand strength of the three community cards. The side bet is completely optional and plays out independently of the main game. Even if you fold before the community cards are revealed in the main game. You can only play the bonus bet if you bet in the main game.
Here is the pay table for the 3 Card Bonus Bet:
- Royal Flush 50:1
- Straight Flush 40:1
- Three of a Kind 30:1
- Straight 6:1
- Flush 4:1
- Pair 1:1
In some live casinos there is an optional 6 card bonus. This is based on your hand in combination with an additional 4 cards revealed after the main hand is over. Progressive jackpots can be paid for 6 card ‘Super Royal’ hands in some casinos.
SG Digital’s Mississippi Stud Poker in New Jersey
SG Digital’s version of the game in New Jersey has table limits that range between just $0.10 and $50, and these apply to both the ante and the side bet. The chip denominations are at the bottom of the screen and you can scroll from left to right to move through them. With your chip value selected (an arrow points to the selected chip denomination) you’ll simply click on the ‘Ante’ section of the betting area to place that bet. Click again on the ‘3 Card Bonus’ section to place the side bet.
When your betting is finished, hit ‘Deal’ and the five cards are dealt, with the 3 community cards face down. You can now choose whether to bet 1x, 2x or 3x the ante, as well as fold. Your final option is ‘Max Bet All’, which will automatically enable you to place the maximum bet on all three rounds of betting (this would be a good option if you are dealt a high pair, such as Kings, with your initial 2 cards).
The game has a crisp and clear lay out, with all of the pay outs displayed clearly on the felt.
What is the house edge for Mississippi Stud Poker?
The house edge at Mississippi Stud Poker is relatively low for casino games, at just 1.37%. This edge applies when you play with the optimum strategy. Keep in mind that playing optimally in this game is far more difficult than in other casino poker variations which only have a single play / fold decision point.
One thing to bear in mind when playing is that you should never use the 2x the ante betting option – always use either the 1x or the 3x options.
Mississippi Stud Online Table Games
The side bet has a slightly higher edge for the house at 2.14%.

Final thoughts
Mississippi Stud Poker is an enjoyable and engaging game from SG Digital. The strategy in this game comes from the bet sizing and whether to fold or not, as you’ll have no control over the cards (you can’t discard any cards and receive new ones).
