Virginia Sports Betting is Slowly Launching

Fans of sports betting in the state of Virginia were excited to see legal sports betting launch in the state on January 21st, 2021. But, the rollout of Virginia sports betting has been fairly slow as only four operators are live as of this writing. The four sports betting operators that are online in Virginia right now are BetMGM, BetRivers, FanDuel Sportsbook, as well as the DraftKings Sportsbook.

BetMGM currently holds an untethered mobile license in the state of Virginia. Meanwhile BetRivers was able to launch under the umbrella of Rush Street’s forthcoming casino license.

Now that the Caesars brand in Virginia has received its sports betting permit a few days ago in the state, we know a bit more. It can be assumed that William Hill will be launching sports betting in the state any day now. But, after that, it is anyone’s guess which sports betting operator will launch next in the state of Virginia.

The FanDuel Sportsbook was the first online sports betting site to accept a legal sports bet in the state. However, the daily fantasy sports brand turned online sportsbook was soon joined by rival DraftKings a few days later. In total, twenty five companies have applied for licenses to operate sports betting in the state of Virginia.

FanDuel was able to partner with the Washington Football Team. So, this helped the company get preferential treatment when it came to the approval process for VA sports betting due to a favorable clause in a state law.

But, the Virginia Lottery has been very tight lipped about the whole process. And, this is considering the fact that the Virginia Lottery has had ninety days to consider the applications that were required to be submitted at the end of October.

The first weekend for legal sports betting in Virginia was quite lucrative for the state. Virginia, together with the state of Michigan, accounted for around a quarter of the over thirty million transactions that were tracked in the seventeen legal sports betting jurisdictions in the United States.

New Tennessee Sports Betting Operators Launch

Just a few days ago, the Tennessee Education Lottery special meeting gave their approval to William Hill Sportsbook as well as WynnBET Sportsbook to launch in Tennessee. However, unfortunately neither operator would be able to launch before this coming weekend’s Super Bowl. Both William Hill and WynnBet need to fulfill further requirements before they can fully launch in the state.

In addition, Tennessee Sports Betting is also looking towards a launch for TwinSpire from operator Churchill Downs. As of this writing, the state of Tennessee has four sportsbooks that are currently in operation. These sportsbooks are BetMGM, FanDuel, DraftKings, and Action 24/7. Also, ZenSports is another operator that has to contend with a pending Tennessee license.

Tennessee has seen a great launch for sports betting in the state. Part of that success has been due to bets on the Tennessee Titans. And, Tennessee has also seen a boon from out of state visitors who travel there to place their bets. There are eight states that border Tennessee, but back in December, not a single one of them offered mobile sports betting. Though, that has changed this year.

Sports Betting in the Northeast Sees Traction

As of this writing, Massachusetts, Connecticut, AND New York are all looking to legalize sports betting in some form. However, the state of New York has made some confusing moves.

The road to sports betting in Connecticut can get complicated because years ago, gaming exclusivity had been granted to the Mohegan and Mashantucket Pequot tribes. However, it does appear that there is a compromise to be struck in the future between all sides. So, Connecticut sports betting will most likely be coming in the next few months.

For instance, the legislation SB 146 would allow the tribes to operate Connecticut sports betting at their casinos as well as online. And, the Connecticut Lottery would also be able to expand into online sales for keno as well as the lottery. Currently, SB 146 has seventeen sponsors from both chambers. However, it is not the only Connecticut sports betting bill on the docket.

State Senator Dennis Bradley has filed SB 570. This bill would legalize sports betting, iLottery, iGaming, as well as tribal casinos in Bridgeport. Legislators in the state of Connecticut know they have to work fast to legalize sports betting in the state.

As of right now, interested bettors are able to travel to Rhode Island to place their sports bets. And, with both New York state and the state of Massachusetts eyeing sports betting legalization, Connecticut needs to keep up.

State Senator Brendan Crighton has long been a champion for the legalization of Massachusetts sports betting. State Senator Crighton has rewritten his 2020 legislation attempt to include higher upfront fees. His hope is that these fees would be able to generate tens of millions of dollars in revenue for the state, making the legislation more appealing.

As of right now, in the state of New York, sports betting is technically legal. However, legal sports betting in the state can only take place through retail casinos. And, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has thrown his support behind the idea to only open the sports betting market to one mobile operator in the state.

Conclusion

As you can see, many states are looking towards legalizing sports betting as a way to bring in extra revenue. Many of these states had not been supportive of the idea of legal sports betting until this year. But, the sports betting market in states that have legalized the practice speaks for itself.

Now that we are approaching one of the biggest sporting events of the year, we can see more states ramping up their legalization efforts. So, we may see even more states presenting legislation for legal sports betting after the Super Bowl. Keep coming back each week to see the latest legal sports betting news!

Whether you’re from Minnesota, Nebraska, Missouri or Wisconsin, If you plan on making a trip to Iowa soon, you can legally wager on sporting events while you’re here.

There are few qualifications to be able to enjoy legal sports betting in Iowa.

Can I bet on sports in Iowa?

It depends. You don’t have to be a legal resident of Iowa to bet on sports there. The only parameters you need to fit within are:

  • At least 21 years of age
  • Not on any gambling self-exclusion lists
  • Physically within the Iowa state lines when you place your bet

The choice of sports betting apps for Android and iOS devices in IA may not be as robust as the market in NewJersey, but Iowa holds its own, given its population. Among those sports betting operators in IA are:

  • Elite Sportsbook
  • Hard Rock Sportsbook
  • Q Sportsbook

The first two steps to bet legally are the same, no matter where you are.

You can register for an account with these operators and deposit funds even before making your way into the Hawkeye State.

It’s not illegal to create an account or fund it from your state of residence. It’s just illegal in most of the states that neighbor IA to place a bet.

If you’re from Prairie State, you are welcome to legally and safely wager in Illinois as well. This guide will detail how to bet in Iowa if you don’t make your home here. We will begin with the Prairie State.

How to bet on sports in Iowa from Illinois

First off, there’s no need for you to cross the MississippiRiver to wager on sporting events legally. Illinois also hosts a regulated market for sports betting.

If you’re going to do so anyway, however, and you want to get some bets down while you’re in IA, you can do so easily. It might just take some adjustments.

While some of the IA books operate a single customer database, others keep the rolls for different states separate. That means you may have to register a new DraftKings, FanDuel and PointsBet account while in Iowa even if you already a customer with these sports betting operators in Illinois.

Additionally, WilliamHill and BetRiversSportsbook have separate apps for Iowa and Illinois.

Once you’re registered or signed in and have funded your account, you can place your bets. Every legal sportsbook is available for online betting, but if you’re looking for a retail sportsbook in Iowa, here are those closest to the Illinois border:

How to bet on sports in Iowa from Minnesota

If you’re a fan of Twin Cities‘ sports teams and determined to place some legal bets on their games, IA sportsbooks welcome your bets. Unfortunately, all efforts to legalize wagering on sports in Minnesota have failed so far.

You can register for and fund an account for IA online sportsbooks from your home in Minnesota. That way, as soon as you cross your state’s southern border, you’re raring to go.

This is where you should note that most IA sportsbooks offer some greatbonuses for new customers, such as matching funds for your first deposit or guarantees against lost bets. Don’t let that free money slip away.

After you’ve downloaded the apps, registered, handed over some of your hard-earned money to take advantage of those promos, and made your trip to IA; you’re ready to bet. Search for the odds on the GoldenGophers, Lynx, Timberwolves, Twins, Vikings and Wild games and stake your claims.

Once you’re in Iowa, geolocation technology allows you bet at any online sportsbook in the state. However, if you’d like to watch those events as you bet from a brick-and-mortar sportsbook, there are a few casinos close to the MN border. Those include:

  • DraftKings Sportsbook at Wild Rose Casino Emmetsburg, 777 Main St., Emmetsburg, IA
  • Elite Sportsbook at Grand Falls Casino, 1415 Grand Falls Blvd., Larchwood, IA
  • FanDuel Sportsbook at Diamond Jo Dubuque Casino, 301 Bell St., Dubuque, IA
  • FanDuel Sportsbook at Diamond Jo Worth Casino, 777 Diamond Jo Lane, Northwood, IA

How to bet on sports in Iowa from Missouri

State

Whether you’re a supporter of the Kansas City Royals or the St. Louis Cardinals, Iowa sportsbooks are ready to take your wager. Just head up Highway 61 or Interstate 35 a few hours.

Unfortunately, MO legislators have fallen short of legalizing sports betting in Missouri to date. The pressure is mounting, however, as four states that neighbor MO have active markets and Kansas is trying to join that fray.

Depending on the time of year, look for promos for individual Kansas City Chiefs and St. Louis Blues games at IA sportsbooks. The same goes for Sporting KC matches.

A good practice is to download the apps and register for all IA sportsbooks. That way, you can compare odds for the bets you want to place and be sure you’re getting the best “price.”

How to bet on sports in Iowa from Nebraska

There’s nothing bigger in the Cornhusker State than the college football program that goes by the same nickname. While Nebraskans voted in November to allow the racetracks in their state to offer casino games, that doesn’t include sports betting.

Thus, if you want to place a legal bet on the Cornhuskers or any other event, you’ll have to cross the border into Iowa. You will find the markets somewhat limited on college sports, however.

In IA, legal books can’t take prop bets on individual college athletes’ performances. For example, you can’t bet on how many yards the Cornhuskers’ best running back will accumulate in a game.

However, team-based props are absolutely fine. So, if you want to get some action down on how many points the Cornhuskers will score in the first half of a game, those bets are available. There’s an abundance of college betting odds at every online sportsbook in Iowa available to you once you are the Hawkeye State.

One of the best places to enjoy the annual HeroesGame between the Cornhuskers and the Iowa Hawkeyes is a brick-and-mortar sportsbook. Here are the closest of those retail sportsbooks near the NE border for out-of-state bettors:

  • DraftKings Sportsbook at Wild Rose Casino Emmetsburg, 777 Main St., Emmetsburg, IA
  • Hard Rock Sportsbook at Hard Rock Casino, 111 3rd St., Sioux City, IA
  • The Sportsbook at Ameristar II Casino, 2200 River Rd., Council Bluffs, IA
  • William Hill Sportsbook at Harrah’s Council Bluffs, 1 Harrah’s Blvd., Council Bluffs, IA
  • William Hill Sportsbook at Horseshoe Casino Council Bluffs, 2701 23rd Ave., Council Bluffs, IA

How to bet on sports in Iowa from South Dakota

South Dakotans voted in November to allow Deadwood casinos to offer sports wagering. That may also extend to tribal casinos in the state if they can renegotiate their gaming compacts.

However, it’s uncertain whether that will include any online wagering right now. Additionally, there’s no sure timetable yet for when the Deadwood casinos will actually start accepting wagers.

At least, for the time being — and even after Deadwood sportsbooks go live, it may still be more convenient to cross the state line into IA to place legal wagers here. IA online books may offer more competitive odds and promos as well.

The only way to know is to go. After the sportsbook has verified your eligibility and you’ve funded your account, the sports betting world is your oyster, especially if you opt to bet online in Iowa.

Some brick-and-mortar sportsbooks are in prime locations to welcome South Dakota bettors. From there, you can also play some other games if you like. Those locations are:

  • DraftKings Sportsbook at Wild Rose Casino Emmetsburg, 777 Main St., Emmetsburg, IA
  • DraftKings Sportsbook at Wild Rose Casino Jefferson, 777 Wild Rose Rd., Jefferson, IA
  • Elite Sportsbook at Grand Falls Casino, 1415 Grand Falls Blvd., Larchwood, IA
  • FanDuel Sportsbook at Diamond Jo Worth Casino, 777 Diamond Jo Lane, Northwood, IA
  • Hard Rock Sportsbook at Hard Rock Casino, 111 3rd St., Sioux City, IA

How to bet on sports in Iowa from Wisconsin

Despite the presence of sports franchises like the Milwaukee Brewers and Bucks along with the Green Bay Packers and UW-Madison Badgers, sports betting remains illegal in Wisconsin. Therefore, IA may be on the list of gambling destinations for Wisconsinites.

Online sportsbooks in IA do their best to make bettors from Wisconsin feel welcome with potentially lucrative promos for new customers. Even if you’re an old hand with these brands, however, you can rest assured that they have deals for you as well.

The one potential exception to that statement is wagering on player drafts in leagues, such as the NBA and NFL. IA law doesn’t allow sports betting licensees to accept bets on those events.

Therefore, if you want to bet on who the Bucks and/or Packers might draft when those events come around, you’re better off heading to Illinois or Michigan instead to place your out-of-state bets.

Until the legal status changes in WI, however, IA books will take your bets on everything the law allows. Here are some brick-and-mortar books close to the WI border you may visit if you wish:

  • DraftKings Sportsbook at Wild Rose Casino Clinton, 777 Wild Rose Drive, Clinton, IA
  • Elite Sportsbook at Rhythm City Casino, 7077 Elmore Ave., Davenport
  • FanDuel Sportsbook at Diamond Jo Dubuque Casino, 301 Bell St., Dubuque, IA
  • Q Sportsbook at Q Casino, 1855 Greyhound Park Road, Dubuque, IA
  • William Hill Sportsbook at Isle of Capri Casino Bettendorf, 1777 Isle Parkway, Bettendorf, IA

No matter which neighboring state you’re coming from, the landscape of online and retail sports betting in IA has something to offer you. Winning some of your wagers can make a trip to the Hawkeye State worth the investment.
